The Andie Swim success story

When Melanie Travis was looking for a one-piece swimsuit to wear to her tech company’s lakeside retreat, she was utterly disappointed by her lack of options.

Knowing she couldn’t be the only woman facing this problem, she decided to build a brand and make her own.

She leveraged her background working at tech startups to launch Andie Swim, which enables customers try on  custom designed, American-made one-piece swimsuits in the comfort of their own homes.

Shortly after launch, she and her team migrated the original web store to BigCommerce to solve a billing issue and take advantage of the many integrations on the platform.

That move is paying off: the company has fulfilled more than 1,000 orders and seen a 200% increase in website conversions.

Migrating to BigCommerce and leveraging Rebillia

In the early stages of a custom ecommerce site build-out, our developers ran into an issue with credit card billing that corresponds to our home try-on feature.

We needed to be able to place a 3-4 week hold on credit cards while potential buyers try on the product and send it back, but we couldn’t find a platform that supported this type of billing.

After our developer tried to patch together Stripe and our site, we realized we needed an alternative –the DIY job couldn’t scale with us.

That’s when we found the Rebillia integration with BigCommerce.

Rebillia lets us do recurring orders by placing secure holds on credit cards. It also provides a number of other features that have been helpful while we grow.

We were thrilled when BigCommerce connected us with a partner developer who smoothly integrated the functionality and helped us migrate our old site to our new one.

Why BigCommerce Was a Better Fit Than Shopify

After having a Shopify and BigCommerce site, I’ve noticed a lot of differences in terms of functionality and support.  

Anything you want to do on Shopify requires going to their app store. It makes their platform feel like a thin piece of paper that I’ve just stacked a bunch of features on. Shopify feels like a black box where users are left completely on their own.

Despite my constant tweaking on Shopify, my conversion rate and traffic is much higher on my BigCommerce site. And I love how I’m shown an analytical dashboard every time I log in.

And finally, as an entrepreneur and solo founder, BigCommerce provides me with more of a community than Shopify, which I really value.

Incredible customer support

When I was first deciding on which platform to launch my US business, BigCommerce customer support was so much more helpful than any other platform’s support.

During peak summer season, my small team was maxed out trying to grow this new ecommerce business –– and I didn’t have time to figure out a lot of website-related issues on my own.

That’s why we were so impressed with the BigCommerce team: There was always someone there who could walk us through process and connect the dots.

We even had a point person who regularly checked in with us and answered all of our questions. It was incredible.

Nimble platform for quick scaling

Endicia is the shipping integration we use, which has made what could have been a logistical nightmare for us very manageable.

Our home try-ons run smoothly, and we even have the ability to offer our customers custom kits with over 15,000 possible combinations of suit styles, colors, and sizes.

So far, we’ve already processed and shipped several thousand orders, and we expect that number to continue growing quickly.
